@AStateSoccer Preps for Clash With UCA

From Arkansas State:

JONESBORO, Ark. (8/31/16) – After a successful road trip that resulted in a victory over Southeastern Louisiana and tie with La Tech, the Arkansas State women’s soccer team returns home to take on in-state opponent Central Arkansas Thursday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. at the A-State Soccer Park.

The Red Wolves (1-1-1) had a successful road swing through the state of Louisiana that resulted in a 1-0-1 record with a 1-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana thanks to an own goal from the Lions that proved to be the deciding factor. Against La Tech, the Red Wolves trailed for a large portion of the much, but found the equalizer late and held on in both overtime periods to preserve the tie.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Ponder has played a large role in A-State’s early season success and ranks 26th in the nation with an average of seven saves per game. Her 0.913 saves percentage is the 31st best in all of NCAA Division I, while her .621 goals against average ranks 70th.

Ponder tallied her first career shutout in the victory over Southeastern Louisiana, which included six saves and then added a seven save performance against the Lady Techsters. Her early season success has also earned her national recognition by EveryBodySoccer.com, which ranked her as the ninth best keeper among all sophomores in Division I.

A-State has also gotten key contributions from a pair of its true freshman in the early season. Annica Karlsson notched her first career goal in the match this past Sunday, while Julie Chambers had an assist on the goal. Chambers also helped setup the own goal in the victory over Southeastern Louisiana.

Central Arkansas (2-2-0) will be playing just its second road game of the season Thursday and has had impressive games in all four its matches thus far.
